Beverages are a big part of our lives and we select them for lots of different reasons like thirst, fun, taste, energy, hunger, boredom, to cool down, or even warm up. Personal selection is based on your age, stage, lifestyle, and probably occasion.

If you want to live a long, comfortable life, you will want not only to eat a diet that promotes longevity but also drink beverages with similar benefits. There is no better drink to deal with hydration than water. Staying hydrated is one of the best things you can do for your overall health. Consuming at least 8 ounces of water a day can help support physical performance, prevent headaches and constipation, and more.

In ancient Egypt, it was a very popular tea drink from the Sudanese rose – Karkade. Karkade tea, or hibiscus tea, is recognizable for its deep red color and cranberry-like taste. It has been argued to be the preferred drink of the ancient Pharaos. It is even mentioned in the ancient medical document the Ebers Papyrus (1550 BC) for its medicinal properties. Hibiscus petals have been discovered by archaeologists along with other incense and objects in the tombs of noble Egyptians.

Egyptian tea is made from Hibiscus Sabdariffa. Every part of this southern plant (broad leaves, bright flowers, small seeds, and woody stems) has unique healing properties. This red tea contains many vitamins (A, B, C, and P), bioflavonoids, fruit acids, polysaccharides, and pectin. In India, there is a legend that somehow a battle broke out between the gods and demons for the possession of the Nine Treasures. One of the treasures was garlic. In this terrible battle, one of the gods was severely wounded. And then Indian healers prepared him a magical elixir of youth, which consisted of garlic and milk. This elixir saved God from death, and the war was won.

The recipe for the elixir is simple: boil 2 crushed heads of garlic in 1 liter of milk and let it brew for an hour.

The potential effects of garlic on longevity are difficult to prove. But given the beneficial effects on important risk factors like blood pressure, it makes sense that garlic could help you live longer. It contains the mineral thiamine and the trace element germanium. The latter is responsible for strengthening the vascular walls and even preventing varicose veins. Garlic is widely recognized as an agent for the prevention and treatment of cardiovascular and other metabolic diseases, including atherosclerosis. In a recent article published in The Times of India, garlic milk is referred as a powerhouse of medicinal properties.

Vikings are known to drink hallucinogenic herbal tea before battles, which made them hyper-aggressive and less able to feel pain. Well, this drink obviously did not help with their longevity.

But we are talking here about another drink of Vikings.

The Old Viking tea is made of a blend of five herb species growing in the pure environment of Iceland: Iceland Moss, Birch, Angelica, Meadowsweet, Wild Thyme, and Barley.

 

These herbs are known for their health and healing effects. Iceland Moss is nutritive, soothing, and stimulating for the respiratory and digestive systems. It is antioxidant, antimicrobial, and antiviral.

Birch leaves are used to make tea which is a diuretic and is believed to be good against gout and rheumatism. Drinks based on birch leaves can suppress appetite and help to lose weight. Caucasians are very proud of their longevity drink from fennel. Amazing fennel health benefits make it a longevity-supporting all-star.

Pour 25 g of fennel root with 1 liter of boiling water, boil for 2 minutes, and let it brew for 10 minutes. Drink 3 cups a day.

Or pour 1 tsp of crushed fennel fruit with a glass of boiling water, let it brew for 2 hours in a closed thermos, then strain. Drink 1 tbsp 3-4 times a day 20 minutes before meals.

It is worth noting that the Caucasus Mountains have the highest proportion of centenarians, or people living longer than 100 years, in the world. Geographically, the region lies between the Caspian and Black Seas, sandwiched between Russia in the north and Iran in the south.

Traditional Chinese herbal medicine has a long history in Asian countries, which has antiaging properties and could intervene in aging-associated disorders. The effectiveness of traditional Chinese medicine relies on its large variety of natural active chemicals, multiple targets for therapy, and diversity of treatment approaches.

One of the ancient recipes, similar to the Indian one, uses garlic.

 

It recommends to take 350 g of garlic, peel, rinse, and roll twice in a meat grinder. Dilute garlic with alcohol (200 grams) and leave to infuse for ten days, then filter and after another three days we begin the course of treatment. Then, drip garlic-alcohol tincture in cold milk (50 ml) and drink it 3 times a day 30 min before meals.

For the best results, you will need to add an alcohol-garlic solution according to the scheme: 1 drop at the first dose (in the morning), 2 at the second (at lunch), 3 at the third (in the evening), and so on for five days until you reach 15 drops by the dinner of the fifth day. On the sixth day, take a milk solution with 15 drops of tincture in the morning and begin to reduce one drop. After five days (in the evening of the tenth day of treatment), you come out for 1 drop. After that, add 25 drops to the milk in each dose, and drink until the entire supply of tincture is exhausted.

If everything is done correctly, then you will rejuvenate your entire body, and clean the vessels of fat deposits. It is recommended to repeat the course no more than once every five years.

Recently, archaeologists found a mysterious ‘Elixir of Immortality’ in an ancient Chinese tomb. The liquid is a mixture of potassium nitrate and alunite. Considering that ancient China “medicines” were composed of all kinds of unusual ingredients you wouldn’t usually consume, the question remains whether this ancient elixir was ever actually imbibed or simply placed in the tomb as a ritual burial object.

Greek coffee made headlines in 2013 as the elixir of life, the secret to longevity among inhabitants of Ikaria. Dr. Gerasimos Siasos, a physician and professor at the University of Athens Medical School, published the results of his studies that drinking a daily cup of Greek coffee is one more in the long list of food and lifestyle clues behind these islanders’ enduring life spans.

Making good Greek coffee requires mindfulness and presence; it is not just a matter of pressing a button on an automated espresso maker or turning on the coffeemaker for a cup of filtered coffee.

Making Greek coffee is something of a ritual. The coffee should be finely ground and requires a special pot, called a briki, for brewing (see above).

First, you have to pour water into the briki. Then you measure out one or two heaping teaspoons of the coffee and as much sugar as desired (hopefully not much). With a long-stemmed spoon or miniature whisk, you then proceed to stir the coffee over a low flame until it begins to swell and rise in the briki.

The best Greek coffee is actually made over a bed of hot sand, and there are special machines in contemporary cafes in Athens and beyond where you can find this. You lift the coffee several times over the flame as it swells, careful not to let it boil over, until creamy foam forms on the surface.

The health benefits of coffee are truly amazing (at the right amount).

Tibetian butter tea

Butter tea, known as Po cha in Tibet, is made from churning tea, salt, and yak butter. The tea used is a particularly potent, smoky type of brick tea from Pemagul, Tibet.

A portion of this brick tea is crumbled into water and boiled for hours to produce a smoky, bitter brew called chaku. This is then stored until used to make butter tea.

Siberian ginseng

The root of the Eleutheroccocus centicocus plant, also called Siberian ginseng, has been used in Russia for centuries. There are many different remedies using ginseng root for health and well-being. The simplest one is an infusion.

To make an infusion, pour 1 teaspoon of crushed root with 2 liters of boiling water, wrap in a blanket and insist for 2 hours. You can drink it instead of tea, 1 cup 2-3 times a day.

Siberian ginseng has many health benefits. It helps to normalize the way in which the body responds to stress and acts to regulate the manufacture and secretions of the adrenal hormones. Siberian ginseng has also been found to increase white blood cell counts, shown to lower blood sugar levels, enhance mental and sexual performance, improve learning and memory, and sharpen vision. In other words, if you are looking for a longevity drink, this is the one!

Don’t confuse Siberian ginseng with other types of ginseng. Siberian ginseng is not the same herb as American or Panax ginseng. Be careful about which product you choose.

Although Golden Milk appears to be a new and trendy drink invented in the west, it has been widely used in India as part of tradition for thousands of years. In Indian Ayurvedic Medicine, Golden milk is a nutritional tonic, consumed for its many health benefits, and is very popular amongst yogis.

The cinnamon and ginger root in golden milk are warming spices, which are considered to be excellent at balancing excess Kapha.

This delicious drink which can be made at home is said to have an array of health benefits including a reduced risk of Alzheimer’s disease, certain cancers, heart disease and type 2 diabetes, making it a no-brainer for anyone wanting to live a long and healthy life.

South American mate

When walking around Argentina, Uruguay, Paraguay or southern Brazil, a surprising drink is everywhere. The natives drink it at home as well as at work, in the car as well as on the street, at the university as well as in the park… It is everywhere. It is drunk by everyone and at any time of the day. This South American drink is mate!

The Guarani people were the first to use yerba mate, which gave them energy. First, they chewed the leaves. Then they brewed it by filtering the herbs with their teeth. Finally, they used calabashes as containers and reeds as filter straws.

Mate is an infusion made from dry herbs. A popular variation of mate is tereré. This consists of infusing the yerba in cold water. In Paraguay, this is usually how it is drunk, in order to withstand the heat. In Argentina, tereré is very popular in summer, and the water is sometimes replaced by fruit juice.

There are many ways of preparing tereré, and here is one of them.
